Election Night Declared as Most Tweeted Political Event Ever

The 2012 presidential election was a tense battleground on November 6, as the event reached record-breaking numbers as the most tweeted political event in U.S. history. Confirmed by Twitter’s government team, the tweets managed to hit a grand total of 20 million tweets at around 10:16 PM ET, before Barack Obama was crowned as the victor of this year’s election.

Obama also shattered Twitter records by sending out a tweet at 10 PM ET saying, “RT if you’re on #TeamObama tonight.” This tweet skyrocketed with 100,000 retweets within the past hour. This breaks the previous retweet record, made by Justin Bieber, with the tweets generating 200,000 retweets within several days of posting. Not only is this feat impressive, but it also gives me a little more faith in Twitter now.
