Kay M. Madati, head of entertainment and media and global marketing solutions at Facebook, discussed the effect of social media on entertainment at Mashable‘s Media Summit on Friday. The Media Summit explores how new forms of technology and innovative business models are transforming the media landscape.
According to Madati, the “Big 5″ broadcast networks — ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX and the CW — collectively launched about 25-30 shows this season, but only about six will survive. Not only that, the average ratings for TV shows are lower.
What Madati wants to do is for advertisers to invest more money into social media for their projects (films or tv shows) because he think that there will be more of an increase of ratings if they focused their ads on sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. He believes that doing this would be more beneficial rather than puting their money towards commercials or other various types of advertising strategy.
