Dennis Tito, the world’s first space tourist, is going to hold a conference on Feb. 27 to announce a 501 day trip to Mars, hopefully to launch in January 2018. The nonprofit organization Inspiration Mars Foundation, led by Tito, hopes to inspire a new generation of Americans. The organization hopes that a trip like this will get people intersted in math and science again, like when America went to the moon.
Tito become the first space tourist in 2001 when he paid $20 million to go to the international space station, but with this trip he hopes to go further. He intends to go to Mars but not land on the surface or enter the atmosphere. The current design they have for the spacecraft would support 2 people. There are concerns that being confined in a small space for so long may have psychological problems. The people behind this endeavor hope that this will inspire work that might lead to the colonization of Mars.
